Abstract

This study aimed to analyze health self-perception and needs of a population group in a municipality in the state of Santa Catarina. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out with 255 users of urban buses. A questionnaire was used for the collection of demographic data, health selfassessment, functional status, morbidity data, health needs. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, with Pearson's chi-square test, at 5% significance in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The sample consisted mainly of adult (72.2%; 184) women (64.3%; 164), with high school level (39.2%; 100). The prevalence of negative self-perception on health was 35.7% (91), higher in the elderly (54.2%; 32), in those with morbidities (44.3%), and / or functional limitations (70.8%; 46). Health needs were related to lifestyle (62.4%; 151) and access to health services (26.4%; 64), being associated with health selfassessment. The age and education profile observed helps to explain the prevalence of positive health self-perception, and health needs in biopsychosocial dimensions of life. It is suggested that health professionals reflect on users' perceptions and health needs as a resource to reduce vulnerabilities and promote health.
