Implementing a Palliative Care Unit in an intermediate-complexity hospital in the city of Londrina - Paraná: an experience report

The occurrence of deaths in hospitals is frequent, and requires preparation for these healthcare facilities to offer an integral care until the end of life. Palliative Care (PC) is essential to support patients in this stage, but is still limited in Brazil. Thus, the experience of implementing a PC unit in an intermediate-complexity hospital is described. Initially, a committee was created with a professional team of the hospital to plan the implementation of the PC unit. An institutional protocol was set to organize the workflow for the PC support of inpatients, to define modifications in the hospital routines, with allocation of a specific room, and professional training was provided. This initiative is innovative, since it applies PC in a general hospital, with satisfactory initial results. Finally, a discussion about this application model to include PC in the public health care policies is provided.
