Anti-HIV pre and post test couseling in pregnant in Fortaleza, Ceará

Abstract

To analyze how health professionals develop the individual counseling before and after a HIV testing in family health units in Fortaleza Ceará. Three doctors and four nurses participated in the study. The data was compiled from august 2004 to February 2005 by open interview, participant observation and analyzed used the theoretical counseling referential of the Ministry of Health. The results show that health professionals do not use individual counseling skills for pre and pos-testing during prenatal based upon their educational support, emotional support and risk evaluating compounds.They do not recognize that pre-test counseling can help pregnant women to decide to do HIV test. The anti-HIV test is included and requesting together with the other routine prenatal exams and it is not consider the counseling components.
