Influences on breastfeeding practice: a three-generation case study

This work aimed at understanding the influence of mothers and maternal grandmothers on the breastfeeding process in the home context. This is a qualitative research of the multiple case study type, carried out with 3 families in a town of Parana State, with a total of 9 women, among which 3 are great-grandmothers, 3 grandmothers and 3 mothers. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews during home visits and analyzed using the cross-data synthesis technique. After analysis, two categories were identified: strength of family values and beliefs in breastfeeding practices, and maternal and child care: differences among three generations. The study concluded that cultural factors nfluence health practices and the breastfeeding context. Nursing mothers must be prepared to refute advice based on common sense, without losing the support network set up by mothers and grandmothers. Prenatal care is the adequate time to prepare women.
