Audiovisual strategies as an instrument of health education for patients with rotator cuff syndrome

Handmade drawing and vídeo lesson are strategies applied by doctors to educate patients about their disease. In order to identify whether any of these methods provide better learning, this prospective and randomized study was developed with two group of patients: one that was informed about the diagnosis of rotator cuff syndrome through drawings performed in real time, and another through a video lesson, both explained during the doctor’s appointment. Then, a questionnaire was submitted to the patients to assess the acquired knowledge. The study included 88 patients, 44 in each group. The drawing technique proved to be significantly more effective than the vídeo lesson (p=0.0457) in relation to the acquisition of knowledge by the patient, leading to a conclusion that health teaching strategies, involving actions that strengthen the doctor-patient relationship can positively interfere in the patient's comprehension.
