Abstract

This study aims at investigating the treatment withdrawal in the Program for Tobacco Control in Cambé-PR, Brazil. This is a cross-sectional survey with 92 smokers. In data collection were used the registration forms of the smokers, the monthly accounting records of the program and semi-structured interviews with smokers who gave up on the treatment. The results showed that, among the program participants, were predominantly female (57 = 62.0%), aged between 40-59 years (50 = 54.3%). Most were married (55 = 59.8%). Smoking initiation occurred between the age of 10 and 20 years (79 = 85.9%) and 47 (51.1%) had made one to three previous attempts to stop smoking. It was found that 56 (60.9%) associated addiction with their work activity and 60 participants (65.1%) were high-grade nicotine dependent and 78 (84.5%) were in the contemplative stage of smoking cessation. The dropout rate of the program was 23.8%.
