From the wish to the reality of being a research advisor in the health area

Qualitative case study, through semi-structured interviews with advisors in the health field, with the aim of understanding motivations, learning trajectory, needs and guidance practices in the health field. Two supervisors at postgraduate level and two supervisors of undergraduate students only were selected; subsequent selection was by snowball sampling. The guiding questions were: "What does being a supervisor mean to you?"; "Please tell us how you learned to be a supervisor?"; "What strategies do you use to guide research projects?"; "What are your needs as a supervisor?". 14 supervisors took part in the study, highlighting challenges related to inadequate training and relationships with students being supervised. The role of the advisor is seen as crucial, functioning as a guide and source of encouragement for students.
