This article aims to characterize patients with hypertension as risk factors and antihypertensive treatment in a primary care service. This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed with 85 people who have Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH), and belong to a micro-area of a Basic Health Unit (BHU) in the city of Goioerê, PR. Data collection was performed from January to March 2008, using a form with closed questions. From the group surveyed, it was found 84% have the disease for more than five years, 74% were on blood pressure levels above those recommended in the interview and of these, 19% do not monitor the pressure regularly, 45% do not follow medical prescription, and 94% said they forget to take prescribed medication. As for the exposure to risk factors, it was observed that 25% of respondents were sedentary, noting that 59% reported that they did not receive appropriate guidance on the practice of physical activity. In face of theses results, the need to develop a work aimed at strengthening the link between the health service and the community is noted. This would allow the increase of the level of knowledge concerning the importance of blood pressure control and ensure the access of these patients to basic health services to solve them.
