Profile and expectations of softmore students of a nursing

The purpose of this paper is to know the profile of nursing undergraduate softmore students at Londrina State University and to identify their expectations towards the course. Data were collected in
July 2008 using a questionnaire with open questions regarding their profile and expectations towards the course and the university. Sixty students that were approved in the year of 2008 were interviewed.
Most students were female, with mean age of 21 years-old and single. Most expect to work in the hospital area compared to community health, mainly in high complexity wards. The motivation for
choosing nursing was mostly the sense of “caring for” and “calling”. Regardless of area of work, they all have previous knowledge very close to nursing practice. They expect the internship scenario will
provide organized learning spaces, highlighting ethics and humanism as priority skills. It is necessary to deepen the discussion into softmore students´ expectations towards the pedagogic principles of the course. New studies should be done to visualize the influence of undergraduate courses over the conceptions the students present when they graduate.
