Abstract

This paper analyzed the application of a linkage technique between the databases of the mortality information system (SIM) and live birth information system (SINASC) for studying neonatal mortality. This is a time series study compounded by neonatal mortality data of the live birth in Recife, from 1999 to 2009. The linkage technique was applied to correlate the death certificates with the respective live birth certificates, resulting in a linkage rate of 93.20%. For 211 deaths (6.80%), it was not possible to identify the true matches because of underreporting in SINASC and information quality problems. At the time series data, the linkage rate shows an increment of 12.94%. The results demonstrated that the technique was viable and can be used by the monitoring services for at-risk newborns, and in planning and evaluating mother-child healthcare actions.
