Managers’ profile in Primary Health Care: an integrative review

Abstract

Objective: To characterize the local management profile in primary health care.
Method: A literature integrative review from the Virtual Health Library (BVS) and Specialized Nursing Database (BDENF) was performed using the key words “Gerência de Serviços de Saúde” (Healthcare Management) AND “Atenção Primária à Saúde” (Primary Healthcare). Articles published in all languages, from 2006 to 2015 were included, resulting in 14 studies.
Results: The prevalence of nurses as local health managers was observed, as well as the importance of skills such as leadership, communication, organization, planning, good relationships, knowledge, creativity, and ability to motivate others. Continuing education was highlighted as an important tool for management qualification.
Conclusion: The definition of the health local manager’s skills , and discussions about the management of such health services are essential for the qualification of the network services in the Unified Health System (SUS).
