Abstract

This study is an integrative literature review that aimed at verifying the guidance offered to women in rooming-in. The data was collected from the “Base de Dados em Enfermagem”, “Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde”, and Scientific Electronic Library Online, from December 2014 to March 2015. For this review, the keywords rooming-in, puerperium, nursing and guidance were used. As inclusion criteria the following was defined: fully published investigations between 2010 and 2014, available in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Papers with no free access were excluded. The research resulted in 506 publications; however, after reading of their title and abstract, eight remained as the final sample of the study, of which seven were of qualitative nature. The papers analyzed highlighted the meaning of maternity, educative experiences of the health staff in roomingin, the implementation of rooming-in, and mothers’ feelings towards breastfeeding. The knowledge of puerpera women about hygiene of the newborn, breastfeeding, mother and child care after birth, and health education during the puerperal pregnancy stage was approached. The puerpera women were the main focus of study in six of the papers, and two of them treated of the nursing team. Despite focusing the attention on the newborn, the studies revealed a lack of guidance to the mother concerning child care and their needs in rooming-in, a place that favors the development of actions specifically related to women, and to health promotion.
