Abstract

The word audit has its origin in the Latin word "audire" that means listening, and currently has a wide application in health. The aim of this study was to analyze the scientific literature on the subject in the period from 2005 to 2015, focusing on its concept, method, purpose and legal basis. This was an integrative literature review, the data of which were collected through a survey of the indexed scientific production at the Virtual Health Library (BVS) using the expression clinical audit AND nursing through the following filters: articles published with full text, available in Portuguese from Brazil and year of publication from 2005 to 2015. The nine articles were available for printing and indexed in the databases of LILACS (Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde), BDENF (base de dados em Enfermagem), and CidSaúde. One article was excluded because it was not related to the researched subject. There are gaps to be filled regarding nursing audit in Brazil. There are few scientific papers on nursing auditing, and these are particularly restricted to the audit process when the search strategies were applied.
