Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the perception of mothers of children with a diagnosis of congenital syphilis about the disease. This is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive research of cases of congenital syphilis in the year 2013, held in the city of Sobral, state of Ceará, developed by the tutorial Group of the Program of Education through Work for Health - Health Surveillance (PET-Saúde/VS). Data were collected through the studies of the medical records, and semi-structured interviews; the latter were analyzed by means of the technique of thematic categorization by Minayo (2008). The lack of knowledge by mothers about the disease could be observed, which was influenced by a low level of education, and low economic index, in addition to the deficit of guidance by professionals, leading to inadequate treatment. Therefore, it is believed that the guidanceby a healthcare professional to the pregnant women with syphilis, mainly about the risks children run when infected with the Treponema pallidum, can lead to a reduction of the data revealed in this search.
