Abstract

This study aimed to know the impact generated by the activities performed on the man's health group in a Family Health Unit of a district of the city of Novo Hamburgo – state of Rio Grande do Sul, related to the participants’ healthcare and, specifically, to know the meaning of healthcare from the perspective of the male participants of the group. This is a qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study using a focal group for data collection, which was divided into two phases, with the participation of 13 men; data analysis followed the assumptions of Minayo´s thematic analysis (2012). It was found that the subjects conceive health care in a comprehensive way, expressing it through healthy aging, lifestyle and participation in groups. The group showed to be effective as an intervention method, as a significant impact on changes in both individual and collective lifestyle was evidenced in the men’s statements. After participating in the group, the participants reported taking more care of their health, and said that they feel happier, relating these achievements to the friendships formed, the exchange of experiences by aggregating knowledge and information. This had an impact on life quality improvement, and on the formation of a social network among participants.
